Re: Why (I think) Ubuntu is Better Than Windows

"Hardware support is better than you think"

Still, hardware support is better for Windows 7, no doubt about that.

"Access more than 4GiB RAM on a 32-bit install out of the box"

Nice, but why just don't use 64-bit Windows?

"Easily create a bootable, functional operating system on a USB stick"

I don't think I ever needed feature like this and I'm using PC's for almost 20 years. Indeed, it's nice to have, but looks pretty useless.

"Find out where each file comes from"

Sounds great and I hope it really works the way you described (because the screen shows something that I've been seeing for 15 years or so).

"Email me when system updates are available"

There are several Windows Update Newsletters, but I prefer notifications anyways.

"Go from blank disk to fully installed in under an hour"

It takes 15 minutes to install Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (yes, it's around 3x faster than Windows XP). After installing it I'm getting latest GPU drivers and that's all. The rest including network/sound cards, printers etc. is already working. So I guess it's possible to say "go to from blank disk to fully installed in under an half hour" when we're talking about Windows 7.

"Move a hard disk"

That's another nice feature, but wait - who and why moves the HDD with fully operational OS - especially when there's a handy USB stick creator?

"Compiling and packaging applications for older OS releases"

That's amazing, but with Windows you don't even have to care about such things - I hate Vista, so it took me around a decade to move from XP to Windows 7 and I still think that XP is a great OS. By the way Windows 7 is fully backward compatible.

"Fixing a bug"

This really sounds amazing and I'd love to be able do to such things to my Windows, but I guess it will never happen :(

"Re-install the OS and Applications without losing your data"

I believe it was working this way even with 10-years old Windows XP, you will lose you data ONLY if you format the hard drive, reinstalling keeps all programs and settings.
